NATIONAL BEEKEEPING AND HONEY MISSION

Construction of Mini Honey Testing Lab.                       (Project; Ongoing)

The use of bee hive product honey as food and medicine by mankind has been in existence from time immemorial. In fact, records have it that raw honey is the most ancient sweetener, and it was noted to have been in using throughout the world several million years ago. Honey is as wet, flavor full liquid food of high nutritional value, and immense health benefits. Furthermore, honey can be an effective carbohydrate source and a better substitute to glucose for exercise and athletic performance, duetoits constituent of various classes of sugars. Over the year, many foreign substances such as glucose, dextrose, molasses, corn syrup, sugar syrup flour and paraffin has been used as adulterants in honey adulteration. Similar products might lead to some changes in physical characteristic, such as samples with no flavor only sweet in taste, extremely light or dark in color The Nagaland with its abundant floral resources has been deemed an ideal geographic area for the promotion of the apiculture market. With such possibility of rising demand abroad, it can become significant players to benefit from the furthering of the Sweet Revolution for income & employment generation for farmers. rural youth, farm women and other stakeholders. The honey testing laboratory will be beneficial for local beekeepers/producers help in quality production of honey and its export to other countries. Apart from this, Beekeeping technology will support beneficiaries' particularly rural women, youths and practicing farmers to provide them monetary, nutritional and social benefits to farmer's families. To achieve this objective, a mini honey testing laboratory is proposed to be established at Asetti, Merangkong village, Mokokchung District Nagaland, for the benefit of farmers, rural youth and other stake holders there is no honey testing lab is available in this region. Certificates regarding quality of the honey and other beehive products will be also issued to the concerned as per the FSSAI norms. The scientific bee keeping, honey Production, processing, marketing and export, which would significantly contribute to GDP and boosting the rural economy where more than 400 bee keepers are presently practicing bee keeping has a source of livelihood.

Objectives of the Project

  • To maximize the honey production through establishing quality stock center.

  • To development of productive bee strains through selective breeding.

  • To conservation of bee genetic resources for multiple economic benefits.

  • To capacity building and awareness raising in terms of management plans and training manuals for farmers, fruit growers and extension workers.

  • To Mass multiplication and planting of major honey plants through various forestry schemes.

  • To prepare of extensive floral calendars for different ecological zones.

  • To encouragement for migratory bee keeping practices for higher honey production.

  • To create a network of laboratory facilities for the identification, testing and control of bee diseases and pests.

The mini honey testing laboratory will undertake the following analysis of contaminants;​

  • Antibiotics

  • Heavy metal

  • Pesticide residue Analysis

  • Diastase activity

  • Hydroxy Methyl Furfural (HMF)

  • Fructose to Glucose ratio

  • Specific gravity

  • Moisture content

  • Total Ash content

  • Electrical conductivity
