Activities 2025-2026

1. Skill Development Training on Agarwood Cultivation and Artificial Inoculation      Date 22nd – 24th April 2025

     Venue: ICFRE – Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI), Jorhat, Assam.

The Indian Council of Forestry Research & Education (ICFRE) – Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI), Jorhat, in collaboration with the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCORMS), conducted a three-day Skill Development Training on Agarwood Cultivation and Artificial Inoculation from 22nd to 24th April 2025. The training was aimed at strengthening technical knowledge and hands-on skills among selected representatives from various northeastern states engaged in agarwood cultivation initiatives.

Participants included community leaders, trainers, and NGO functionaries from Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Assam.

Notably, staff from the Nagaland Ecological & Sanitation Management Society (NESMS), based in Mokokchung District, Nagaland, actively participated in the training program as Master Trainers under the Training of Trainers (ToT) framework. NESMS’s involvement reflects its growing role in promoting sustainable livelihood through agarwood cultivation in Nagaland.

The training covered diverse modules including:

  • Agarwood nursery management, cultivation, and seed handling.

  • Role of Neurozera conferta insect in natural agarwood formation.

  • Advanced techniques in artificial inoculation (stick and syringe methods), with live demonstrations using “Sasi Inoculant.”

  • Scientific insights into oil extraction using hydro-distillation and value addition in traditional agarwood products.

  • Exposure visits to a commercial agarwood depot in Golaghat, Assam, where participants observed end-to-end processing and international market-ready products.

ICFRE-RFRI scientists and experts including Dr. Nitin Kulkarni, Dr. Rajib Kumar Borah, and Dr. Nibedita Baruah facilitated interactive sessions and demonstrations. The training also offered a platform to address critical issues such as pest management, CITES regulations, trade barriers, and marketing strategies.

The NESMS team expressed gratitude for the opportunity and committed to conducting step-down training programs within their project areas in Nagaland to transfer the acquired knowledge to Farmer Interest Groups (FIGs) and beneficiaries. The training concluded with a valedictory session and certificate distribution, marking a successful capacity-building initiative for promoting sustainable agarwood cultivation in the Northeast.

2.Refresher Training Programme for Administrative Staff of DDACDate: 11th July,2025Organized by: National Centre for Drug Abuse Prevention (NCDAP),Institution: National Institute of Social Defence (NISD),Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India

The National Centre for Drug Abuse Prevention (NCDAP) under the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, successfully conducted a Refresher Training Programme for Administrative Staff working under the Drug Demand Reduction Programmes across India. The programme was held on 11th July 2025, aiming to strengthen institutional capacity, enhance coordination, and update staff on current protocols and best practices in drug abuse prevention and rehabilitation services.

The training covered key areas including:

  • Updated administrative and financial guidelines under the DDAC scheme.

  • Monitoring and documentation procedures.

  • Reporting mechanisms and MIS protocols.

  • Ethical and sensitive handling of addiction-related cases.

The refresher training provided a platform for administrative staff to engage with subject experts, clarify procedural challenges, and exchange implementation experiences from across states.

Staff from the Nagaland Ecological & Sanitation Management Society (NESMS) actively participated in the training, representing Nagaland's efforts in drug demand reduction through community-based approaches. Their presence reinforced NESMS’s ongoing commitment to efficient program delivery, compliance with national guidelines, and continuous capacity building of its personnel.

The programme concluded with an interactive Q&A session, feedback sharing, and reaffirmation of the collective goal to work towards a drug-free and rehabilitated society under the guidance of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.

On July 16, 2025, Nagaland Ecological & Sanitation Management Society (NESMS) officially launched its website to enhance outreach, transparency, and accessibility. The website serves as a platform to showcase our projects, share updates, and connect with stakeholders, beneficiaries, and well-wishers.

GST Training Session – July 23, 2025
On July 23, 2025, NESMS staff attended a one-day training session on Goods and Services Tax (GST) conducted by Shri Meren Imsong, Commercial Taxes Officer. The training provided valuable insights into GST procedures, compliance requirements, and its implications for NGOs, enhancing the financial management capacity of the Society.

Student Training on Secretarial Practice – August 19, 2025
On August 19, 2025, students of B.Com 3rd Semester, Department of Commerce, St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama attended a one-day training session on Secretarial Practice at NESMS. The training provided the students with practical exposure to office management, record keeping, and documentation processes, enabling them to gain hands-on learning experience in organizational practices.

Key Stakeholder Engagements and High-Level Meeting - 12 & 14 August 

On 12th August 2025, the staff of NESMS met with Shri Ch. R. John Zeliang to discuss matters related to the NEEPCO project. The meeting focused on exploring key aspects of the project, including its progress, implementation strategies, and potential areas of collaboration, thereby strengthening coordination for effective execution. Subsequently, On 14th August 2025, the Managing Director of NESMS along with the Head of CSR & Nodal Officer held a meeting with the Deputy Secretary and Additional Private Secretary to the Minister of State for Power, Government of India, Shri Shripad Naik. The meeting aimed at discussing power sector initiatives and exploring opportunities for collaboration and support in ongoing and future projects. These engagements involved high-level coordination, official consultations, and strategic discussions, requiring organized planning and administrative support for effective outcomes

Youth Skill Development and Internship Programme- 1st September - 31st November 

As part of its commitment to promoting youth engagement and creating avenues for employment, NESMS facilitated a three-month internship programme for students pursuing B.Tech and B.Sc degrees, which commenced on 1 September and concluded on 31 November. The initiative aimed to provide a meaningful platform for young individuals to gain practical experience and develop skills relevant to environmental management and sanitation. Interns were actively involved in fieldwork, project activities, and research-oriented tasks, enabling them to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application. This programme reflects NESMS’s ongoing efforts to empower youth, enhance employability, and nurture a skilled workforce aligned with sustainable development goal. The initiative required sustained supervision, mentoring, field engagement, and coordination over an extended period to ensure meaningful skill development and hands-on experience

Promotion of Agarwood Plantation in Mokokchung District - 13th October 2025 

Promotion of agarwood plantation in Mokokchung district was carried out on 13 October, focusing on encouraging farmers and local communities to cultivate agarwood as a sustainable and high-value economic crop. The initiative aimed to diversify livelihoods, enhance income generation, and reduce dependency on traditional farming practices. Through awareness programmes, training sessions, and technical support, farmers were guided on proper cultivation methods, plantation management, and sustainable harvesting techniques. The promotion also emphasized the ecological benefits of agarwood cultivation, such as afforestation, soil conservation, and biodiversity enhancement. By supporting agarwood plantation, the initiative seeks to create long-term economic opportunities while contributing to environmental sustainability and rural development in Mokokchung district. The initiative involved extensive outreach, technical guidance, field-level demonstrations, and continuous engagement with farmers to ensure adoption of sustainable practices

13. NESMS Rehabilitation and Treatment Programme for Alcohol and Drug Users - 7th November

On 7th November,  NESMS (Nagaland Ecological & Sanitation Management Society) successfully conducted a Rehabilitation and Treatment Programme for individuals affected by alcohol and drug use as part of its commitment to promoting community health and social well-being. The programme brought together participants, including individuals undergoing recovery, support staff, and community representatives.

The initiative aimed to provide a supportive and structured environment for rehabilitation, focusing on both physical and psychological recovery. The programme included counselling sessions, awareness discussions, and therapeutic activities designed to address substance dependency and promote healthier lifestyle choices .Participants were guided through various interventions that emphasized behavioural change, emotional resilience, and relapse prevention strategies. The sessions also highlighted the importance of family support, community integration, and access to continued care for sustainable recovery.

The programme witnessed active engagement from participants, fostering a sense of encouragement, trust, and shared responsibility. Overall, the Rehabilitation and Treatment Programme served as an important step toward restoring well-being, promoting recovery, and strengthening NESMS’s efforts in addressing substance abuse and supporting affected individuals within the community. The programme required professional counselling support, structured sessions, and coordinated efforts to address both psychological and social aspects of rehabilitation.

Road Safety Programme 

NESMS (Nagaland Ecological & Sanitation Management Society) successfully conducted a Road Safety Awareness Programme as part of its commitment to promoting public safety and responsible road usage. The initiative aimed to educate participants on the importance of road safety, traffic regulations, and responsible driving practices. The programme included informative sessions, interactive discussions, and practical guidance on safe driving behaviour, use of protective gear, and adherence to traffic rules.

Participants were sensitized on key issues such as the dangers of over-speeding, driving under the influence, distracted driving, and the importance of pedestrian safety. Emphasis was also placed on preventive measures, emergency response, and the role of individuals in reducing road accidents.

The programme witnessed active participation and engagement, reflecting a strong interest in promoting safer roads within the community. Overall, the Road Safety Awareness Programme served as an effective initiative in enhancing awareness, encouraging responsible behaviour, and supporting NESMS’s broader objective of ensuring public safety and well-being. The programme involved awareness campaigns, educational sessions, and community outreach activities to effectively promote responsible road usage and safety practices.

NESMS Student Internship Programme: Providing a Platform for Experiential Learning and Professional Development (1st December 2025)

In 1st December 2025, NESMS (Nagaland Ecological & Sanitation Management Society) successfully conducted a 15-day internship programme for students of St. Joseph College, Jakhama, as part of its commitment to academic collaboration and capacity building. The programme engaged 3 student participants, providing them with a practical platform to gain hands-on experience and exposure to real-world developmental activities. The internship was designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and field-based application. During the programme, students were introduced to the functioning of NESMS, including its key initiatives in environmental management, sanitation, and community development. They actively participated in field visits, project monitoring activities, and office-based assignments, enabling them to understand operational processes and implementation strategies. 6The programme also emphasized skill development, critical thinking, and professional growth. Through interactive sessions and guided mentorship, students enhanced their communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.

They were encouraged to engage with community stakeholders and contribute insights, fostering a sense of responsibility and practical understanding of development work.

The internship programme witnessed enthusiastic participation and positive engagement from the students, reflecting its effectiveness as a learning platform. Overall, the initiative served as a valuable opportunity for students to gain meaningful exposure, while reinforcing NESMS’s role in supporting education, skill development, and youth empowerment. The programme involved guided mentorship, field exposure, and structured learning activities to ensure meaningful experiential learning within a short duration
